Musings of an inappropriate woman
An experimental web log by Rachel Hills: political editor, feminist, pop sociologist... prone to more fits of shallowness than the aforementioned would suggest.

Sydney: So much fun, you'd think you were in Melbourne!

With so many interesting events coming up over the next week or so, there’s no reason to stay home. Listed here because if I can’t make them all (and sadly, I can’t), someone ought to.

Tuesday 6 May: She’s With The Band
Launch of former-Brag-editor-turned-screenwriter Georgia Clark’s first novel, She’s With the Band. 6-7:30pm, Glebe. To be launched by Girlfriend-cum-Cleo-editor, Sarah Oakes.

Wednesday 7 May: sQuareOne Independent Publishing Seminar

Featuring Nadia Saccardo (TwoThousand.com.au), Penny Modra (Is Not Magazine) and Monica Kade (Mink Magazine). 6:30pm-8:30pm, Ultimo. Blurb says: “Australia is known for having the most concentrated media ownership in the world. But now with super efficient computer, Internet and self-publishing software, anyone can create and distribute their own blogs, magazines, e-newsletters and zines. In fact, there is a burgeoning following for alternative, independent press. Come and hear the panel who are independent publishers in each of their fields discuss the trials and tribulations of their projects.”

Wednesday 7 May: Saint Augustine Academy at The Wall

Courtesy of my fabbo and stupidly talented uni mate, Irina Belova. 8pm-3am (not so great for kids with jobs to go to the next morning), Kings Cross. Blurb says: “We are thrilled to be host an exclusive fashion show by amazing local label Saint Augustine Academy. Fashion will meet art and music in this one night only event where Saint Augustine Academy’s new range, Psycho Candy will be unleashed.”

Thursday 8 May: Launch of Fashion Industry Broadcast magazine
7:30pm-11:30pm, Kings Cross. Blurb says: “Dave Evans from Hugo’s Lounge and Paul Roberts and the FIB team are calling all Industry Crew & Fashionistas, to wave bye bye to Fashion Week and welcome the new industry insider magazine, Fashion Industry Broadcast.”

Friday 9 May: ArtCycle Launch Party
6:30-9:30pm, Ultimo. Blurb says: “sQuareOne invites you to the Launch Party of our ArtCycle Exhibition. Our first exhibition will feature the works of the smARTarts Festival Winner, Rebecca Murphy. The exhibition will run until the 24th June, so if you can’t make it to the party, be sure to stop by our space to check out the exhibition.”

Friday 9 May: Nerds, Words and other Disasters
6:30-9pm, Chippendale. Blurb says: “Chris Tamm curates a collection of works by street, zine and other feral artists from several states for this showcase of DIY. Come see the cream of Australian counter culture. The collection will feature 2D and sculptural works and include zines, stickers, postcards and other lo-fi nick nacks for sale.”

Friday 9 May – Sunday 11 May: All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane
Various times, Chauvel, Paddington. Blurb says: “If you’re in your twenties, single and hate your job, you’ve got to get out of this town. Anthea is 25, single and hate’s her job – and all her friends are moving to London or Sydney or Melbourne. Her best friend Michael wants her to stay, but is there anything to stay for now that he’s got a new girlfriend? Michael and Anthea have to resolve their feelings for each other before she gets on the plane!”

Saturday 10 May: Media Makers Weekend Workshop: Improving Your Website
With Peter Cossey, who was instrumental in rebuilding the newmatilda.com website. Ultimo, 10am-4pm. Blurb says: “Everyone has a website these days, but the difference between a good and great one is huge. Come along and speak people in the know and get a basic overview of how to set things up, spruce things up and get the traffic to flow where you want it.”

Monday 12 May: Interesting South – The Second Edition
Surry Hills, 6pm-11:30pm. Blurb says: “We’ve found more fascinating people and have asked them to speak about something they care about. We want to replicate the experience of clicking from one really good blog to another, ranging across sciences, arts, music, jokes and whatever. You’ll be happy to know we picked the Belvoir as we’re striving to keep the kind of atmosophere we had at the last event. Something intimate enough that you can see the whites of the speakers’ eyes so it feels more like a chat than a lecture, but with comfier seats.”
